Drive Year: 1989

Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique
After a steady, multi-year, diet of Caught in the Middle of A 3-Way Mix it’s awesome to spend some time with the real deal. I don’t think a month has gone by that I haven’t listened to this at least once since it came out…

Bob Mould – Workbook
Listened to this while reading the 33 1/3 book of the same name, which provided an interesting and fresh way to listen to these tracks with new insights. Will forever remain one of my favorite albums.

NoMeansNo – Wrong
An absolute belter of hardcore/metal/post-punk rockers. Awesome complexity and technical precision. One of my most-all-time-favorites – it’s been out of rotation for far too long (not anymore…)

Flaming Lips – Telepathic Surgery
Well before their psych-pop phase, this is noisy and chaotic. And I love it.

Buffalo Tom – Buffalo Tom
Damn fine guitar-indie-rock. Always a fave of mine, which I’m happy to have passed down to the next gen…

Edie Brickell – Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars
A fun flashback to a simpler time of catchy radio-ready tunes highlighted by ‘quirky frontwoman’. Fun throwback, but it can probably stay in the time capsule.

XTC – Oranges & Lemons
Fun and quirky pop tunes. Love this.

fIREHOSE – fROMOHIO
They were never the Minutemen, but they were as close as we were going to get. A fun album, but the real money is in their next one (Flyin’ the Flannel)

Not listened to, despite best intentions….

Shawn Colvin – Steady On
Spacemen 3 – Sound of Confusion
Nirvana – Bleach
Pixies – Doolittle
De La Soul – 3 Feet High and Rising
Replacements, the – Don’t Tell A Soul
Jesus and Mary Chain – Automatic
Galaxie 500 – On Fire

Notes: Albums chosen from my catalog, based mostly on my at-the-time memories. In a moment of irony, I was massively anticipating doing Drive Year: 1989, and then spent very little time commuting and listened to very little.

Drive Year: 1989 happened in September 2019
